Chapter Twenty-Six

Luke felt light-headed. His heart was racing. He didn’t want to believe what Paul had told him. But the truth was there. He was livid. Beyond livid, if that was possible. And so disappointed.

Grace had lied to him.

Didn’t she understand how he felt about liars? He had told her enough.

What was she thinking? He was a detective for God’s sake. Did she think he’d give her a pass just because they were making love? To make matters worse, she lied in front of his friends and colleagues.

His week had been brutal. Jean’s death was still unsolved. He and Ben had two other cases they were investigating. The only redeeming thing was he was spending his spare time with Grace. They no longer considered her a suspect. She had been cleared of Jean Mays’s murder.

His captain was not pleased to hear Luke was “guarding” Grace at his home. Grace’s stalker was still on the loose. He and Ben had nothing on that front.

Even Sam was striking out.

Paul had texted him yesterday that he had received information on Grace from his sources in D.C. They agreed to meet for lunch today. Paul was already seated when Luke arrived. Ordering beers and burgers, Paul seemed hesitant to give Luke the information.

“Spit it out, man. You’re killing me hemming and hawing.”

Paul prefaced all the information he gave Luke by saying he hadn’t talked to anyone directly involved with Grace. What he heard was after the fact and might be rumors.

It wasn’t a pleasant conversation. Paul told him he spoke to his sources in D.C. They had done some checking, and the rumors were that Grace had fabricated her story and tried to blame it on another journalist. Her in-depth piece ruined the reputation of a senator. She claimed to have corroborating notes and sources, but she couldn’t produce them. After the publication, she was fired and couldn’t get another job. Then, the senator killed himself. His death was blamed on Grace’s false reporting.

Paul said he heard the police didn’t believe Grace’s story about a stalker and dismissed it as sour grapes. She left D.C. for Black Pointe. Rumors had also been flying that her parents were wealthy and helped her get out of the mess.

Shit. Luke couldn’t help thinking about his mom’s death. How similar the stories were—not taking responsibility for your actions, lying, the wealthy parents ready to step up for their kids, and the privilege.

It wasn’t the story he wanted nor expected to hear. Luke’s heart was pounding. He didn’t want to believe Grace lied, ruined a man’s life and let her parents get her out of a jam.

Lunch was ruined. Paul was apologetic. Luke told him not to worry about it; he had asked for the information. They said goodbye and Luke left for the station.

Luke had one more thing to do. That was to contact the D.C. detective who had investigated her case. Something he should have paid more attention to at the beginning.

Late in the day, he was finally able to reach a Detective Emery.
